Sugilite is a rare, complex silicate mineral best known for its striking shades of purple. It was first discovered in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi on Iwagi Islet, Japan, though the vibrant, gem-quality material most people recognize today was later found in South Africa.
While it shares a color palette with stones like Amethyst or Charoite, Sugilite is a relatively durable stone and vitreous to dull. Its unique lithium-rich composition and deep, opaque saturation make it a standout for collectors of rare earth minerals.
Hardness 5.5-6.5
This is a natural stone that has had no treatment other than cutting, drilling, and polishing.
The source of these beads is South Africa and they are cut, drilled and polished in China.
