Calcite

Calcite is one of the most common minerals on earth — so common it's a building block of marble, limestone, and chalk. But gem-quality calcite is a different story. The translucent varieties in yellow, green, orange, and honey tones are far lovelier and rarer than their everyday cousins.

The key thing to know about calcite: it's soft. Mohs 3 means it scratches easily and is sensitive to acids (even vinegar can etch it). This makes calcite beautiful for earrings and pendants, but not ideal for rings or bracelets where it will take daily wear. Handle it with care: avoid ultrasonic cleaners, heat, and harsh chemicals.
