Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral. In its pure form, it is typically a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown with streaks of white. But due to chemical variability, the bright pink color can become grayish, yellowish, or brownish. Rhodochrosite can be more expensive because it is rarely found as well-formed crystals or found in economic quantities.

First found in the silver mines of Romania. It was first described in 1813. The name is derived from the Greek word meaning rose-colored. Rhodochrosite are found in the following locations: Argentina, South Africa, Peru, Russia, Romania, Spain, China, Mexico, and Japan. In the United States it is found in Montana and Colorado. Banded rhodochrosite is mined in Argentina.

Sometimes Rhodonite is confused with Rhodochrosite. Rhodonite is a pink-red color with veins, or "roads", or black manganese oxide.  Rhodochrosite is typically more pink than red with white swirls of manganese carbonate.

Rhodochrosite is the state mineral of Colorado.
