Phosphosiderite

Phosphosiderite is a rare hydrated iron phosphate mineral (FePO4·2H2O) that was first discovered in 1858 in Arnsberg, Germany, though it wasn't formally identified and named until 1890 — making it one of the gemstone world's relative newcomers. The name itself tells its story: "phospho" from phosphate and "sideros" from the Greek word for iron, the two elements that define the stone's composition. Phosphosiderite's most striking feature is its remarkable color palette: soft lavender, orchid-purple, pink, and reddish-violet, often accented with delicate golden-yellow veining caused by cacoxenite inclusions. The finest quality material comes from Chile, where deposits in the Andes yield the most saturated and consistent purple tones, though significant deposits also exist in Argentina, Germany, Portugal, and the United States. Phosphosiderite forms in granitic pegmatites deep underground, creating truly rare material — each bead is unique, with no two stones looking identical. Because phosphosiderite is soft (Mohs 3.5–4), it's best suited for earrings, pendants, and necklaces. Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam.
