Magnesite
Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral typically white, cream, or chalky. Named in 1785 for its magnesium content, it forms when magnesium-rich rocks contact carbon dioxide-rich water.
Magnesite is Mohs 3.5-4.5 — very soft. Best for earrings, pendants, and necklaces. Not recommended for rings or bracelets. Porous, so avoid water and harsh chemicals. Can be dyed easily. Clean with dry cloth only.
Natural Magnesite is white to cream. Some fluoresces brilliantly under shortwave UV light. The stone has dull, matte luster with web-like patterns.
Magnesite has been used for centuries. Native Americans carved it into beads valued as currency, traded individually for rarity and beauty.
