"New Jade" is a trade name for a light-green variety of Serpentine. While it resembles genuine jade in appearance, it is mineralogically distinct. Serpentine is not a single mineral, but rather a group of hydrous magnesium iron phyllosilicate minerals. It forms through serpentinization—a metamorphic process where ultramafic rocks react with hot water at low temperatures. This process drastically alters the rock's density and structure.

The name comes from the Latin serpentinus meaning ”snake-like”. This refers not only to its mottled, scaly green-and-black patterns, but also to its physical texture—polished serpentine feels oddly waxy, greasy, and slippery to the touch.

Serpentine was named the official State Rock of California in 1965—the very first state rock designation in the U.S. It was chosen due to its abundance in the state's mountain ranges, its historical industrial significance, and its geological association with gold-bearing veins. (Note: Serpentinite rock is the actual state rock, which is made predominantly of serpentine group minerals.)

Serpentine is found worldwide.
