Morganite is specifically the pink-to-peach variety of the mineral beryl, the same mineral family that includes emerald and aquamarine. Because gemstones are named by their specific color varieties within a mineral family, there are technically no gemological names like “rainbow morganite." Instead, those other colors belong to sister gems within the exact same mineral family and share the exact same crystal structure and physical properties.
Gemologist George F. Kunz, working for Tiffany & Co; named the gem in 1910 after his wealthy patron, Wall Street tycoon J.P. Morgan, to thank him for his vast gem contributions to natural history museums.
New Hampshire adopted beryl, the overarching mineral family that encompasses morganite, emerald, and aquamarine, as its official state mineral in 1985.
Morganite is mined around the world. The top global producers and notable mining regions include: Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique & East Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States.
