Morganite is the rare pink variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes emerald and aquamarine. Its colors range from delicate soft pink and magenta to warm peach, salmon, and rose gold shades. The distinct pink hue comes from trace amounts of manganese in its crystal structure. Morganite shows distinct pleochroism, meaning it displays slightly different shades when viewed from different angles. Lapidaries must orient the stone carefully when cutting to highlight the strongest pink tone.
Gemologist George F. Kunz, working for Tiffany & Co; named the gem in 1910 after his wealthy patron, Wall Street tycoon J.P. Morgan, to thank him for his vast gem contributions to natural history museums.
New Hampshire adopted beryl, the overarching mineral family that encompasses morganite, emerald, and aquamarine, as its official state mineral in 1985.
