Speckled moonstone is moonstone or rainbow moonstone peppered with naturally occurring dark mineral inclusions. In most gemstone markets, speckled moonstone is actually rainbow moonstone, a gemological variety of white labradorite, that formed alongside other minerals during crystallization including black tourmaline: the most common source of the dark speckles or needles, black mica, magnetite and/or hematite.
Major deposits are mined in Sri Lanka, famous for high-clarity blue moonstones, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, and the United States.
In 1970, the Florida Legislature designated the moonstone as its official state gemstone to commemorate the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 20, 1969
Moonstone is one of the three official birthstones for the month of June, alongside pearl and alexandrite
