Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminum silicate mineral from the feldspar group. What sets moonstone apart from other gemstones is adularescence, a shimmering optical phenomenon where light hits thin, alternating microscopic layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar inside the stone. As light enters, it scatters between these layers, creating a billowy white or blue sheen that appears to move across the surface as you rotate the stone.
Major deposits are mined in Sri Lanka, famous for high-clarity blue moonstones, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, and the United States.
In 1970, the Florida Legislature designated the moonstone as its official state gemstone to commemorate the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 20, 1969
Moonstone is one of the three official birthstones for the month of June, alongside pearl and alexandrite
