Wild Horse Magnesite is named for its striking mottled pattern of creamy white magnesite set against rich reddish-brown veining, which closely resembles the spotted coat of a pinto or paint horse.

Authentic Wild Horse magnesite comes from a single, highly specific geographic location just outside the historic mining town of Globe in Gila County, Arizona. The deposit was discovered in the mid-1990s and is situated in rugged desert terrain that lacks road access. Miners have historically had to hike in and carry raw stone out in backpacks or on pack animals over a mile through rough desert country.

The active mining of Wild Horse magnesite was short-lived, the primary claim operated for only a few years in the 1990s before production halted. Because the original site is no longer actively mined on a commercial scale, genuine Wild Horse magnesite available today comes almost entirely from existing rough rock stockpiles mined during the 1990s. This limited supply contributes to its relatively high value compared to other magnesite varieties.
