Larvikite is a variety of monzonite formed about 300 million years ago during the Permian period in the Oslo rift zone. Known for its dark body color and mesmerizing silver-blue shimmer it was named after the town of Larvik in Norway, where it was first discovered, it is often marketed under names like "Black Moonstone" or "Blue Pearl Granite.”

The signature iridescent flash comes from internal light interference. As light hits micro-layers of two inter grown feldspar minerals, plagioclase and alkali feldspar, it reflects back in bright silvery-blue or steel-grey flashes.

True larvikite only originates from one specific place on Earth, the Oslo Rift region in Norway. While similar feldspar-rich stones exist elsewhere, genuine larvikite comes strictly from this single ancient volcanic zone.

Larvikite was named Norway's national stone in 2007, reflecting its cultural and architectural prominence.
