Magnetic synthetic hematite, often sold under trade names like Hematine or Hemalyke, is a man-made material designed to mimic the appearance of natural hematite while possessing strong magnetic properties that the natural mineral lacks. While natural hematite is a common iron ore, it is technically antiferromagnetic or only weakly ferromagnetic at room temperature—meaning it won't stick to your fridge or attract paperclips.
The material is typically composed of powdered iron oxides mixed with other metals like barium or strontium. The mixture is heated and pressed (a process called sintering) into a material with a "spinel" or "magnetoplumbite" crystal structure, which allows it to hold a permanent magnetic charge.
"Grade AAA" hematite is an industry term used by jewelry designers and bead suppliers to describe premium-quality synthetic magnetic hematite. It features a flawless, mirror-like super high polish, symmetrical faceting for maximum sparkle, and consistent shape with no surface scratching or discoloration.
