Gobi agate is named after the location the stone is mined from, the Gobi Desert. This desert spans nearly 500,000 miles of northern China and southern Mongolia. Gobi agate is a product of several big volcanic eruptions from 100-150 million years ago enduring extreme temperature swings, sandstorms, and water erosion. Because they have been rolling around the desert floor for millions of years, the wind and sand have naturally tumbled them. They feature a unique tactile, waxy, or matte finish straight out of the ground—no lapidary rock tumbler required.
Hardness 6.5-7
This is a natural stone that has had no treatment other than cutting, drilling, and polishing in China.
