Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a lab-created gemstone that serves as the most popular and affordable alternative to diamonds. While it was discovered as a natural mineral in 1937, it is so rare in nature that all CZ used in jewelry today is synthesized in laboratories
It is composed of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) stabilized with yttrium oxide. It is distinct from the natural gemstone "zircon" (which is zirconium silicate). Its industrial production began in the 1970s and has since become one of the most popular synthetic gems in the jewelry world.
