Chrysoprase is one of the most striking, cheerful gemstones in the mineral kingdom. Technically speaking, it is a variety of chalcedony, a type of microcrystalline quartz. While most green gems get their color from chromium or iron, chrysoprase’s vibrant shade comes from trace amounts of nickel.
Chrysoprase gets its name from the Greek words "chrysos" (gold) and "prasinon" (leek), referring to its golden-green color. Its bright, refreshing color has long been associated with the renewal of spring, fertility, and new growth. In astrology, it is also highly connected to the zodiac signs Taurus and Gemini.
The world's finest, most saturated chrysoprase comes from Queensland, Australia. Because it mimics high-grade imperial jadeite, it is frequently traded in Asian markets under the nickname "Australian Jade"
If your chrysoprase starts to lose its vibrant color from being in the sun, you can often restore its glow by storing it in a dark, moist environment (like wrapped in a damp cloth) to let it rehydrate!
