Chrysocolla & Malachite are closely related secondary copper minerals that frequently form together in oxidation zones above copper ore deposits. When they inter grow, they create striking blue-green gemstones often referred to as Chrysocolla-Malachite or Eilat Stone.
Both minerals are created when water containing oxygen and silica or carbonate trickles down through copper-rich rock formations. In carbonate-rich water, copper precipitates as malachite. In silica-rich water, copper precipitates as chrysocolla. Because fluid compositions shift over time inside geothermal veins, layers of green malachite and sky-blue chrysocolla frequently deposit right on top of each other.
Major deposits of combined chrysocolla and malachite are found in Arizona (USA), the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chile, Peru, and Australia.
