Calcite is essentially the chameleon of the mineral world. It is made of calcium carbonate, which is the exact same chemical that makes up ocean seashells, chalk, antacid tablets, and the scale build-up inside your teakettle! Calcite is the primary ingredient in limestone and marble.
Geologists carry small dropper bottles of weak acid (like diluted hydrochloric acid) in the field specifically to find calcite. Because calcite is a carbonate, even a drop of household vinegar will cause it to vigorously fizz and bubble as it releases carbon dioxide gas.
Calcite is the official state mineral of Kentucky, designated to honor the state's massive limestone caves, like Mammoth Cave, which are carved out of and decorated by calcite.
