Bumble Bee “Jasper” despite its trade name, it is not a true jasper or chalcedony. It contains no quartz. It is a soft, porous sedimentary rock, primarily calcite-rich travertine mixed with volcanic ash. Found in only one place in the world: near the active volcano Mount Papandayan in West Java, Indonesia. It forms inside volcanic steam vents (fumaroles) and mud pools during the rainy season.
Bumblebee Jasper gets its name from its distinct physical appearance which often imitate the coloring found on bumblebees.
Unlike ancient gemstones, Bumblebee Jasper was only discovered and brought to the international gem market in the late 1990’s.
