Sodalite

Sodalite

Sodalite is one of the most versatile blue stones we carry — bold, rich blue to blue-violet with characteristic white Calcite veining, often confused with Lapis Lazuli but distinctly its own stone. Here's a quick way to tell them apart: if significant Pyrite is present, it's Lapis. Sodalite was first discovered by Europeans in 1811 in Greenland, but didn't become important as an ornamental stone until 1891 when vast deposits were found in Ontario, Canada. The biggest deposits today are in Brazil. One of our favorite things about this page is our Orange Sodalite — also known as Sunset Sodalite — a natural mix of blue Sodalite and orange Feldspar (Sunstone) that creates stunning rusty-orange veins running through a blue-grey base.
