Pinolith also known as Pinolite, is a unique metamorphic rock that is primarily composed of white magnesite and black graphite. It is known for its distinctive striking appearance with a snow-white background and contrasting, and scattered black, gray, or silver specks. This striking pattern resembles a snowy landscape with dark specks. The magnesite crystals in Pinolith are shaped like pine nuts from the European stone pine tree. This is how the rock got its name, a combination of “pine” (referring to the specks) and “lith” (meaning “stone” in Greek).

Pinolith is found at a small number of deposits in Austria and northeastern Spain. It was first discovered in 1873 in a magnesite deposit in Styria, Austria.

It has a relatively low hardness, ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft compared to other minerals. So, care should be taken when storing and wearing it.

This is a natural stone that has had no treatment other than cutting, drilling, and polishing.
