Opal
Opal is one of nature's most visually striking gemstones — a hydrated silica mineral renowned for its soft, luminous body colors. Common opal (most of what you'll find in the bead trade) doesn't show "play of color," but instead offers stunning solid hues: soft pinks, creamy whites, rich blues, vibrant greens, and warm yellows. These naturally-sourced opals are mined primarily in Australia, Ethiopia, Peru, and Mexico. What makes opal unique is its delicate composition — it contains 3–21% water, which means it requires gentle handling and care to prevent crazing (internal fractures). Opal beads work beautifully in earrings, pendants, and necklaces. They can be used in rings and bracelets with intentional wear and protective settings, though we recommend reserving them for lower-impact designs. Store opal away from direct heat and sunlight, clean with a damp soft cloth only, and always avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam. You'll find these in multiple shapes and sizes — all precision-cut and US-stocked. Offering good prices on quality. Browse our current selection.
