Lapis

Lapis

Lapis lazuli is not a mineral but a rock — lazurite (deep blue), pyrite (golden), and calcite (white). Persian "lazhuward" (blue) + Latin "lapis" (stone) = sky stone.

For 6,500+ years, civilizations treasured it. Ancient Egyptians ground it into eyeshadow. Medieval painters mixed it into ultramarine for masterpieces. Cleopatra wore it.

Lapis is Mohs 5-6 — soft and porous. It scratches easily and absorbs liquids. Best for earrings, pendants, and necklaces. Can be used in rings and bracelets with protective bezel or wire-wrap settings. Bracelets require careful wear — remove before physical activity.

Most lapis is dyed to deepen color. Some is treated with wax or oil. We label all treatments clearly.

Clean with soft cloth and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, heat, and sun exposure.
