Description
Stainless Steel Chain, Ion Plated Rainbow, 3x1mm, Paperclip, Soldered, 3.3 ft.
Stainless steel is a versatile alloy known primarily for its ability to resist rust and corrosion. Unlike regular steel, which can oxidize and deteriorate when exposed to moisture, stainless steel remains "stainless" thanks to its unique chemical makeup.
Rainbow Ion Plating (IP) is a specialized Physical Vapor Deposition (VOD) process used to apply a durable, iridescent finish to stainless steel. Unlike traditional painting or electroplating, ion plating bonds a thin layer of material to the surface at a molecular level, resulting in a finish that is both incredibly hard and visually striking.
The multicolored "oil-slick" look isn't caused by different colored pigments. Instead, it is a result of thin-film interference. By precisely controlling the thickness of the deposited layer and the mixture of gases, technicians can create a coating that varies slightly in density and depth across the surface. When light hits this translucent layer, it reflects off both the top of the coating and the metal surface underneath. These light waves interfere with one another, canceling out some colors and reinforcing others, which our eyes perceive as a spectrum of shifting colors.
