Malachite is a common mineral that is easily identifiable by its gorgeous banded and varied shades of greens. However, with over 50% copper content, it is toxic if ingested or inhaled. Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It often results from the weathering of copper ores. Except for its vibrant green color, the properties of malachite are like those of azurite and the two are frequently found together. Malachite is more common than azurite.
Large quantities of Malachite have been mined in the Urals, Russia. It is found worldwide including Congo, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia; Mexico; New South Wales; Lyon, France, Israel; and the Southwestern United States, most notably in Arizona.
