Java glass beads are handmade, often with recycled glass and produced on the island of Java, Indonesia. Unlike simple painted beads, the "feather" pattern is created using a combed mosaic technique. Artisans take a base bead and wrap it with thin, molten glass threads of contrasting colors. While the glass is still molten, a sharp tool is used to comb the stripes in alternating directions. This dragging of the glass creates a "herringbone" shape that mimics the delicate barbs of a bird’s feather.
