Java glass beads are handmade, often with recycled glass and produced on the island of Java, Indonesia. While the beads Lewis and Clark carried were mostly European glass, most "Indonesian Lewis and Clark" style beads found today are high-quality contemporary reproductions from the Jombang region of East Java, Indonesia. These modern artisans are masters of the craft, often using recycled glass bottles to create their art.

Why the Confusion? The reason they are often linked to the Lewis and Clark expedition is that both involve trade beads. Lewis and Clark used blue faceted glass and "fancy" beads from Venice and Bohemia to trade with Native American tribes. Indonesian beads were traded similarly across Maritime Southeast Asia, often mimicking the styles of beads brought by Chinese and Islamic traders.
