Java glass beads are handmade, often with recycled glass and produced on the island of Java, Indonesia. Unlike European beads that were pulled from a molten furnace as long tubes, most Indonesian chevrons are crafted using a combination of lamp-working and meticulous grinding.

Artisans take a base bead and use a torch to melt glass rods (lamp-working) around a metal mandrel. To get the chevron look the artist applies successive layers of different colored glass. While the glass is molten, they use tools to "pull" or crimp the glass into a star shape before adding the next layer. Once the bead cools, the artisan uses a grinding wheel to shave down the ends of the bead at an angle. As the outer layers are ground away, the inner colored layers are exposed revealing the classic chevron stripes.
