Selenite is a transparent, luminous variety of Gypsum, often with a silky luster. It’s comprised of the crystallization of the calcium sulphate mineral. This translucent stone can have inner striations, creating somewhat of a cat's eye appearance, chatoyancy. 

The name comes from a Greek word meaning "moon stone" and named after the Greek goddess Selene. The Egyptians used Selenite to make windows for their palaces and temples. It can be found in Mexico, Morocco, Poland and New Mexico.
