Lobster Claw Clasp, 27x14mm, Alloy & Enamel, Pink, 5 PCS
Metal alloy with enamel refers to a process where a layer of glass is fused onto the metal surface at extreme temperatures. This creates a "best of both worlds" material: the structural strength of the metal alloy and the aesthetic properties of glass.
The bond between the metal and the enamel is both mechanical (the glass flows into the microscopic pores of the metal) and chemical (metal oxides on the surface mix with the glass). The alloy is cleaned of all oils and "pickled" in acid to create a rough surface. The "frit" (powdered glass) is applied via a wet slurry or dry sifting. The piece enters a kiln. The glass melts and flows over the metal. As it cools, the glass hardens into a smooth, vitreous coating that is permanently fused to the alloy.
