Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in Earth's continental crust, behind feldspar.
Rose Quartz is found in a course-grained igneous rock (usually granite). Its colors range from a pastel pink to a rose-pink hue, including orangey and violet pinks, and are believed to be caused by trace amounts of minerals, like titanium and Dumortierite inclusions. It can be transparent to translucent with soft radiating glow, but many times will have a milky pink color.
Much of the Rose Quartz that is sold today is found in Brazil, South Africa, India, and Madagascar. Other sources include Namibia, Mozambique, and Sri Lanka. In the United States, a deposit near Custer, South Dakota once produced significant amounts of Rose Quartz.
Rose Quartz is South Dakota’s and Georgia’s state mineral.

Heating is a very common form of enhancement and is used to affect desired alterations of color and/or clarity. Heating can also be used to lighten or darken a stone. Heat is one of the conditions that cause gems to form, whether in the ground or in a lab. Heating occurs during natural gem formation. But heating applied to the stone after gem formation is an enhancement.
