Rhyolite is a banded or spotted igneous, volcanic rock with silica crystal inclusions. The composition of Rhyolite is primarily igneous quartz and alkaline feldspars. It is usually pink or gray in color with grains so small that they are difficult to observe without a hand lens. It has a green-black-brown background with more similarities with a Granite than a Jasper or a Chalcedony.
In the 1860’s the German geologist Ferdinand von Richthofen coined the name Rhyolite after finding it in his explorations of the Rocky Mountains. Principal deposits are in Australia and additional ones are found in China, Germany, Brazil, Iceland, India, Ireland, New Zealand and the USA.
