Trapiche amethyst (or trapiche-like amethyst) is a rare variety of purple quartz with a unique color zoning. Not to be confused with star stones, trapiche are minerals that form with a radiating star of inclusions between growth sectors. Some form with a core or hub with spokes radiating outward from the core, while others form spokes from the center of the gem. This type of Quartz was first found in Japan, then Burma, Colombia, and China. Trapiche is named for the grinding wheel used to process sugarcane in Colombia.
