Fluorite, also called fluorspar, is the mineral form of calcium fluoride. It comes in lots of colors, but blue is the rarest. The most prized fluorite specimens come from Swiss and French Alps. Fluorite is also found worldwide in China, South Africa, Mongolia, France, Russia, and central North America.  It was named in 1797 from Latin for "to flow".  Fluorite is one of the more famous fluorescent minerals.  In fact, the word "fluorescent" is derived from the mineral Fluorite.

Fluorite is a very popular mineral, and it naturally occurs in all colors of the spectrum, including purple, lilac, golden-yellow, green, colorless, blue, pink, champagne and brown. It is one of the most varied colored minerals in the mineral kingdom. 

Fluorite is the state mineral of Illinois
